UV Water Purifier
UV Water Purifiers
UV Water Purifiers use ultra violet light to sterilize water They are small units that fit in the palm of your hand so they are ideal to take on hikes or backpacking treks into the wild. Most units use rechargeable batteries and can be plugged into a USB port on your computer, vehicle or smart phone. They prevent getting Traveler’s Diarrhea or Wilderness Stomach Borne Illnesses.
The Steripen, is by far the most common of these types that use ultraviolet light to disinfect and purify, even the most stagnant of lake or pond water sources. Once you know about these handy devices, you will not want to be without one. It really can literally save your life.
Portable UV Water Purifiers are very fast, as they can purify a glass of water in about one minute flat. The can destroy over 99.9% of Bacteria Viruses and protozoa, like Giardia and Cryptosporidium. Not bad for a tiny little device. I have one myself for emergencies as they are easy to carry around and make stagnant water drinkable.
There are even ultraviolet water purifiers that can fit on your Reverse Osmosis Water System. Some can be used inline to any other filter type you have. It will give you that much more protection against the most harmful living microbes in your drinking water supply.
UV Water Filters
Unlike traditional filters a UV Water Purifier is not a true filter, but rather a water purifier. The difference is a traditional filter uses layers of materials to filter out sediment, viruses, heavy metals and other toxins. Whereas the UV Water Purifiers only disinfect the water. Although they do not filter out sediment, chemicals or pharmaceutical products that were flushed into the water supply, they are a must have for emergencies.
They are still “must have” devices that can save you from getting a really bad virus or infection. I recommend having one handy for emergency usage. It is great for removing the microbes, giardia, e-coli, and amoeba that cause contaminated drinking water illnesses, like Montezuma’s Revenge.
I have my own Steripen UV Water Purifer, that I have in my gym bag/hiking bag just in case. In an emergency it’s nice to know that at least I won’t come down with bad dysentery or stomach illness from mosquito larvae or other critters living in the water I am drinking.
It could save you a lot of stomach pain! For more information on how to have purified water for any emergency or survival kit, see Survival Water Filters.
